Hosted Learnership Solutions

Learnerships are formal, workplace-based training programmes typically combining theoretical learning with practical, on-the-job training. Companies that host learners in these programmes play a significant role in shaping their careers and ensuring the programme’s success.

Hosted learnerships may be an important way for businesses to contribute to the upliftment of growth sectors, enhance the economy, reduce the unemployment rate, and create economic activity which further contributes to growth

Hosted learnership defined

A hosted learnership is a partnership between two companies, whereby one company (the lead employer) funds the learnership programme, and the other company (the host employer) provides the workplace facility and dedicated mentors to assist and guide learners.

The lead employer:

  • Contractually agrees to employ selected learners for a specified period of time.
  • Is the learners’ primary employer and responsible for the full employment relationship.

The host employer:

  • Contractually agrees to provide the learners with an appropriate and equipped workplace.
  • Their HR policies and workplace procedures will apply to the learners during this time.

For organisations that don’t have the resources to manage the administrative burden of hosting learners on site – such as time, physical space or managerial capacity – a hosted learnership model is the ideal way to gain business, tax and compliance advantages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a hosted learnership right for my company?

To get the most out of your learnership programme, learners will need hands-on, on-the-job support and mentorship. If your company doesn’t have office space to accommodate learners, or managers and supervisors who are willing and able to coach and mentor learners, a hosted learnership could be a good fit for you.

There are many benefits to absorbing learners from your learnership programme into permanent positions in your company. It reduces recruitment costs by bringing candidates into your business who already know your culture and way of working. It can also unlock tax benefits and boost your B-BBEE scorecard through bonus points for skills development. And, if your programme is carefully designed, you not only develop skills that young people need to become more employable but you can target the skills your business needs to grow – making your learners part of your early talent pipeline.

ATI is an accredited, 100% black female‑owned Level 1 B‑BBEE provider. We deliver SETA and QCTO‑recognised programmes and customised workshops that ensure your learners complete their learnership programme with industry-relevant skills.
